WEBSTER - Anthony W. Szamocki, 74, of 15 Brandes St. died Saturday night
in Webster Manor Nursing Home after a long illness.
He leaves his wife of 47 years, Lorraine (Cazeault) Szamocki; three sons, Norman
P. Szamocki of Montgomery, Pa., Michael Szamocki of Webster and John A. Szamocki
of East Thompson; a daughter, Donna M. Jarominski of Dudley; a brother, the Rev.
John A. Szamocki, pastor of St. Andrew Bobola Church in Dudley; three sisters,
Viola Kullas and Florence Czechowski, both of Webster, and Anna Genander of
North Oxford; three grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A daughter, Sandra J.
Strzelewicz of Webster, died in 1965. He was born in Dudley, son of John A. and
Leocadia (Taberski) Szamocki, and lived here most of his life. He graduated in
1936 from Bartlett High School, where he played on the varsity basketball and
baseball teams.
Mr. Szamocki was chief of police here for 26 years, retiring in 1984. He joined
the Webster Police Department as a full-time officer in 1951 and rose to
sergeant in 1956.
He was an amateur boxer for several years. He won the Golden Gloves Championship
at Boston Garden in 1941 and the New England light-heavyweight championship. In
1942, he was the Hearst All- American light-heavyweight champion.
Mr. Szamocki was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a staff sergeant in
Europe. He saw action in Normandy, northern France and the Rhineland. He was a
prisoner of war of the Nazis for six months.
He was a member of St. Louis Church, the Webster Senior Center, the Worcester
County Chiefs of Police Association and the Worcester County Sheriffs
Association. He was once a member of Webster Lodge of Elks. He was a member of
Webster-Dudley Post, American Legion; Walter R. "Tiff" Szynal Post 5, Disabled
American Veterans; the American Ex-Prisoner of War Association; and the
Polish-American Veterans of Webster.
The funeral will be held Wednesday from Robert J. Miller Funeral Home, 366
School St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Louis Church, 16 Lake St. Burial will
be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are 2 to 4 and 7
to 9 p.m. tomorrow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to
the Leukemia Society of America, Central Massachusetts Chapter, 340 Main St.,
Worcester, 01608; or the St. Louis School Endowment Fund, 15 Lake St., Webster,
01570.
