John W. Zmetra, 86

 

WEBSTER - John W. "Jack" Zmetra, 86, of 40 Harris St., a police officer for many years, died yesterday morning in St. Vincent Hospital, Worcester, after a long illness.

He leaves his wife of 64 years, Rose H. (Mackowiak) Zmetra; two sons, John J. and William J. Zmetra, both of Webster; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was born in Warrior Run, Pa., son of Walter and Anna (Sinkowski) Zmetra, and lived in the Webster-Dudley area for 65 years.

Mr. Zmetra was a police officer for the Webster Police Department for 39 years. He was a patrolman for most of those years, and was a desk officer for several years, before retiring in 1970.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Church, the Fraternal Order of Police and the Southern Massachusetts Police Association. He was a charter member of the 200 Sportsmen's Club, past chairman of Webster Council on Aging and past chairman of Webster Senior Center. He enjoyed fishing.

The funeral will be held tomorrow from Robert J. Miller Funeral Home, 366 School St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, 53 Whitcomb St. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today. Memorial contributions may be made to the Friends of St. Joseph's School, 53 Whitcomb St., Webster, 01570.
